Focus Features has released the red band trailer for The Northman, a Viking revenge thriller directed by Robert Eggers. As expected, there are more gory scenes of violence compared to the previous trailer. The film features an all-star cast led by Alexander Skarsgård and will hit theaters this April 22.
The red band trailer is effectively as gross and bloody as one might expect from an Eggers-directed film, whose past work in the horror genre never fails to embrace the dark and hard work of its incredibly real and intense characters. The new trailer highlights Amleth's journey in better lighting than the previous trailer, giving fans one last push before the film hits theaters.
The Northman is the latest film from The Witch and The Lighthouse director Robert Eggers set in 10th century Iceland, and stars Alexander Skarsgård as Amleth, a Viking prince on a mission to avenge the death of his slain father.
Other cast members from the film are Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen's Gambit), Kate Dickie (The Green Knight), Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man: No Way Home), Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos), Ethan Hawke (Tesla), Claes Bang (The Square), Murray McArthur (Game of Thrones), and Ralph Ineson (Chernobyl). In addition, Eggers managed to recruit singer-songwriter Björk, who is returning to acting in a film for the first time since starring in Dancer in the Dark, 22 years ago.
Here's the official synopsis for The Northman:
“From the visionary director Robert Eggers, here is THE Northman, an action-packed epic that follows a young Viking prince on his quest to avenge the murder of his father. With an all-star cast that includes Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe.”
The new trailer for The Northman reaffirms the film's attention to violence and gore as well as historical detail by featuring stunning images conjured up by flawless reproductions of the armor, weapons, rituals, and battle strategies of the Vikings' golden era.
